Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Date, Chainwire – On May 14, 2025, at 12:12 PM Beijing time, Guoxing Aerospace successfully launched 12 satellites as part of the Space Computing Constellation 021 mission using a Long March 2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The satellites entered their designated orbits as planned, marking the world’s first successful launch of a space computing constellation — a major milestone that opens a new chapter in the global era of “space-based computing.”

This mission represents the inaugural launch under Guoxing Aerospace’s “StarCompute” initiative and is also the first constellation in the “Trisolaris Computing Constellation” project led by Zhijiang Laboratory. The constellation is composed of 12 computing satellites, funded by multiple entities and developed by Guoxing Aerospace. Notably, one of the satellites is named after Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) #7573, symbolizing a landmark moment where Web3 steps beyond the digital realm into a space-based computing network.

What Is a computing constellation?

Traditionally, satellites have served communication, navigation, or Earth observation purposes. A “computing satellite” represents a fourth category, which is expected to become foundational to the other three. Through inter-satellite connectivity, these computing satellites form a new network architecture — the computing constellation.

According to official sources, the 12 satellites in this mission include:

  • Neijiang (Star Era-27)
  • Neijiang Gaoxin (Star Era-28)
  • Taizhou (Star Era-29)
  • Haikou (Star Era-30)
  • Ma'anshan Intelligent Computing-1 (Star Era-31)
  • Chongzhou (Star Era-32)
  • Tiantie Technology (Star Era-33)
  • Bored Ape #7573 (Star Era-34)
  • Yukunzhe (Star Era-35)
  • Great Zero Bay (Star Era-36)
  • Zhijiang-1 (Star Era-37)
  • Zhijiang-2 (Star Era-38)

The 12 satellites, once in orbit, will form a stable constellation through inter-satellite laser communication, distributed computing coordination, and high-speed networking. This system will support in-orbit validation of foundational capabilities such as decentralized cloud computing, space-based blockchain construction, and distributed AI processing.

"The goal of this mission is to enable a shift from ‘space-sourced, Earth-computed’ to ‘space-sourced, space-computed’ models for specific scenarios,” said a Guoxing Aerospace representative. “This supports real-time space computing demands and positions China to take the lead in building space-based computational infrastructure."

The future of space-based computation meets Web3

According to Wang Jian, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of Zhijiang Laboratory, building such constellations can scale a single satellite's computing power from teraflops (T-level) to petaflops (P-level). Much like how the internet connects individual computers into a powerful network, the computing constellation enables synergistic performance across satellites. “This paradigm shift will unlock greater value from each satellite and have a transformative impact on the aerospace industry,” Wang said.

BAYC #7573, one of the most iconic NFTs in the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, has been associated with multiple AI innovation initiatives. Naming a satellite after BAYC #7573 not only recognizes its cultural significance but also highlights the Web3 community’s growing role in cutting-edge science and technology. This moment exemplifies the convergence of AI computing and Web3 innovation — jointly shaping the future of the space economy.
