Nonfungible tokens (NFTs) are no longer the buzzword in the world of crypto and blockchain but instead have become an integral part of blockchain technology services. As the popularity of NFTs soared, so has the conversation around using NFTs to make a difference and giving back to the communities that need it most.
The use cases for NFTs expand if we can attach them to tangible outcomes. As collectors connect further with the causes behind some of the most fascinating NFT projects, they become more engaged, increasing the value of the NFTs.
Using NFTs for social good
The growth in the NFT market is leading to expanded creativity when it comes to using NFTs and turning them into a utility. This, in turn, adds value to the stand alone collectible, providing increased returns for the buyers.
Just recently, we have seen Bored Apes turning into a band called Kingship, while religious relics will be used as NFTs for a charity. Digital Art 4 Climate, for instance, uses NFTs to drive climate awareness. And now, there are projects like KRebels that use the collectible nature of NFTs to highlight the issue of endangered species.
KRebels, a unique NFT project that focuses on the intersection of technology, art and the endangered koala species, is committed to attaching NFTs to the plight of the koala. For their first project, they have created 9,999 original koala-themed NFT collectibles. Each collectible will be utilized in the metaverse to form families, barter for products and evolve as it increases in rarity.
“The idea emerged from one of the team members who was a witness to what happened to koalas during the wildfires in Australia. We also appreciated what has been done by some other NFT projects to give donations of their proceeds to charity. Thus, each team member put their competencies at the service of the cause to create KRebels,” the team shares.
Every user that purchases a KRebels NFT through the project will be playing their part to support foundations dedicated to preserving the koala species. NFT holders will also have a say in the future of the project, bring the NFTs into the metaverse and use the Koala NFTs to earn monthly rewards.
Technology driving awareness of endangered species
According to the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species, one out of four of the world’s mammals and over 40% of amphibians are threatened with extinction due to human activity. Alongside international treaties and laws that aim to help the decline of endangered species, there also needs to be increased awareness of the species that are suffering and need support.
In this respect, the arts have always played a role in highlighting social and charitable causes. The fact that NFTs can be harnessed to amplify the message about habitats that can be critical to the survival of our threatened species needs to be celebrated.
The NFT community is strong with a willingness to support each other's projects and push the boundaries of artwork to build awareness of the underlying technology. KRebels hopes they pave the way to a movement to develop more NFT projects focused on the plight of endangered animals everywhere.
