The city of Perth in Western Australia, will be hosting its very first international bitcoin conference on the 8th November 2014. Certus Consulting presents Bitcoin Australasia Conference featuring international keynote speaker, Roger Ver, who will be making his way to Australia for the very first time.
Conference Targeting Mainstream Adoption
Bitcoin Australasia Conference will be a conference set to explain and promote bitcoin to the Australian mainstream community, as well providing speaker and panel sessions for those well-versed in bitcoin.
Organiser, Sheree Ip, tells us “There are a lot of people in the bitcoin community in Perth from very diverse backgrounds including miners, developers, businesses, merchants, academics and everyday users. It makes perfect sense to hold a international bitcoin conference here and to really showcase what is happening in Australia and, of course, to show visitors the beautiful city of Perth.”
“Most of the bitcoin conferences take place overseas in Europe, Asia and America. It is less frequent in Australia, as we are a little further to travel to. But the Australian summer is approaching and now is the perfect time for a conference and to have delegates come and visit Australia.”
Bitcoin Australasia Conference will have both their international and local affiliates, Miss Bitcoin and Bitcoin Association of Australia, address sessions on Bitcoin 101 to those in the community interested to know more about bitcoin.
Miss Bitcoin will be hosting the session on ‘What is Bitcoin, in Plain English?’ and Bitcoin Association of Australia’s Oxford MBA graduate, Hass McCook, will be hosting the session ‘Busting Bitcoin Myths’.
Australian Bitcoin Regulation Position
The Bitcoin Australasia Conference is set to be the forum to address the current Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) draft rulings on bitcoin. The draft rulings have defined bitcoin as a barter transaction, subject to Goods and Services Tax, and Capital Gains Tax. The ATO is set to close their comments period tomorrow the 3 October 2014, unless an extension is granted. With the Senate inquiry into bitcoin announced today, to be held on March 2015.
Head of Taxation at Curtin Law School, Professor Dale Pinto, who had his publications cited in the recent OECD’s publication on Adressing the Tax Challenges of Digital Currencies, will be discussing taxation implications moving forward on bitcoin.
